Whatser
A location-based service for sharing your favorite spots and discovering new places to go, Whatser is a family of applications and services built atop the SoGeo API, including separate administrative web sites for Whatser staff and business partners, publishers, and spot owners.
Aside from developing the backend system, I’ve been involved in various ways in the design and development of the API clients, working closely with the platform developers to keep as much of the ‘heavy lifting’ as possible onto the server and let the applications rapidly move on to their core user experiences.
For Whatser content, the server has a master POI database and runs identity resolution scripts for merging Facebook Places, Foursquare, Gowalla, Localeze, and user generated content. I created an internal admin panel for operations staff to run a variety of reports and metrics on user behavior, clean and moderate data, track system errors, import content from partners, manage media, send push notifications, and monitor 3rd party social network integration.
